Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has revealed how his departure to Borussia Dortmund in January “happened very quickly” after he as initially honoured to even find out they were interested in him.

The defender has been speaking to Dortmund’s official website, relayed by Fussball Transfers, about his move in January and how it came about.

The full-back joined the German side on loan in the middle of the January transfer window after a frustrating few months at Chelsea.

He had returned to Stamford Bridge in the summer following a successful loan spell at Burnley last season, where he was a key player under Vincent Kompany as they secured promotion back to the Premier League.

He had expected to make that move permanent, but a deal couldn’t be struck, and he instead returned to Chelsea, where he failed to impress Mauricio Pochettino enough to make him a part of his plans.

Thus, he moved to Dortmund in January for playing time and has been a regular since, with nine appearances so far and one goal and two assists to his name.

He’s happy with how things are going and admits it’s all been something of a rollercoaster, with the initial deal being done at rapid speed.

“Of course, I felt it was an honour that a big club was looking for me,” he said.

“We played throughout the year in Chelsea, and I was always part of the squad when the request came from Dortmund. I would have liked to have flown to the training camp in Marbella, but things got complicated and as a player you can’t do more than wait.

“Then suddenly everything happened very quickly. The agreement between Chelsea and BVB, the flight to Germany and the first game the next day. And what can I say: it went quite well.”
