Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has insisted he doesn’t foresee midfielder Enzo Fernandez leaving the club after the World Cup, despite building interest from Liverpool.
Fernandez joined the Portuguese side in the summer in a €12m deal from River Plate in the summer, having established himself as one of the rising talents in Argentina after rising through the ranks over the last four years.
He’s continued where he left off in Portugal, establishing himself as a key player for Benfica in the league and Champions League.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, and he continues to be linked with a move to England, where several clubs were named as suitors.
That’s proven to be a poor decision as Liverpool’s lack of midfield options has been an issue for much of the campaign, with a late move for Arthur Melo not working out.
It’s believed they will look for a reinforcement in January and Fernandez has been named as a target once again. Schmidt, though, isn’t worried about those rumours.
“My son likes Enzo, the way he plays and so do I,” Record report him saying.
“Everyone likes him, he plays good football. My family has always grown up around football, my wife and son have been to the stadium, they like the clubs I’m at.
“I don’t foresee not having Enzo after the World Cup, he’s in the right place to develop. It’s very good for him and for us if he stays at Benfica for a while longer.”
