Everton sport director Marcel Brands has told the Dutch media it’s becoming more difficult to bring in Brazilians as clubs like Chelsea have inflated transfer prices in the country.
Speaking to Voetbal international, Brands was asked about recruiting Brazilian players following his experiences at his former club PSV: “With Chelsea, I do not know how many Brazilians have had success there, and how many got into the first team? Potentially these could have been PSV players. Prices in Brazil have become sky high.
“If the big clubs pay thirty million for a player, then the plan B also automatically becomes more expensive. That is why PSV is shifting the market to countries such as Mexico, where it is still affordable.”
In recent years Cheslea have brought in a number of Brazilian players, with many being sent out on loan rather than being drafted into the first team. Newcastle United loaning Chelsea defender Kenedy is a prime example of this.
Everton forward Richarlison is another young Brazilian player that was brought to the Premier League when Watford paid just over £11m last year. At the time the attacker hadn’t even represented his country but this summer he joined the Toffees for a transfer fee which could rise to four times that.
The youngster has already started to repay his new club with some match winning performances, including scoring twice on his Everton debut against Southampton.
His impressive displays this season have brought him international recognition when he made his debut for Brazil in September. Richarlison has gone on to pick up four caps in the past couple of months.
As for players in Brazil, Brands now has a bigger budget with Everton than he did at PSV, meaning the country remains an option for recruitment.
