On June 16th, we carried a report from Sky Italia, who explained Everton have initiated contact to sign AS Roma defender Chris Smalling.
A day later, Il Tempo reported the Toffees ‘seem ready’ to make an approach to bring the 31-year-old back to England, but they haven’t made an offer yet.
The Serie A side made the centre-back’s signing permanent last summer, a year after they took him on loan from Manchester United.
Smalling struggled with multiple injuries last season, but that’s not stopped the Premier League side from identifying him as a transfer target.
According to Calciomercato, the Merseyside club’s interest in the former Fulham man is ‘always alive’, and luckily for them, the Giallorossi are ‘not against’ his sale in the summer window, due to his injury record in the past 12 months.
Smalling has two years left on his contract and if the Serie A side were to receive an offer worth €15m plus bonuses from Everton, they are ready to do business.
Calciomercato’s report doesn’t mention Smalling’s stance on the possibility of moving to Goodison Park.
