Following Benfica’s 3-0 win over Barcelona for the Champions League a few weeks ago, there was big expectation in Portugal that the Eagles could get another good result against Bayern Munich.
The Germans’ visit to Lisbon, however, turned into the Eagles’ worst home defeat in European tournaments, with Jorge Jesus’ side trailing 4-0 in the final score.
A few clubs had scouts to watch that encounter from close, and as reported by newspaper Record, Everton were one of them.
Probably listing their new targets for the upcoming transfer windows, the Toffees had their official keeping an eye on what happened at the Estádio da Luz, and may have found something interesting despite the disappointing mood in the Portuguese capital.
The striker, however, is injured and had already been ruled out of this match.
Now if we look at past rumours, we’ll also see that the Toffees had been interested in Lucas Veríssimo back in 2020. The club reportedly made an offer while the defender was still at Santos.
Now in Portugal, the 26-year-old was named by Record as Benfica’s best player in the match, as they point out he won most of his duels and had no blame in the goals scored by Bayern.
Other players from the home side who had a fair performance were goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, midfielder João Mário and striker Darwin Nunez, who’s been the club’s sensation this season.
Bayern had their goals scored by Leroy Sané, Everton (OG), Robert Lewandowski and Sané again.
With their win depending on their big stars, it looks more likely that the Toffees’ interest would really be in players from Benfica instead.
