SportBild report in their magazine this week that Bayern Munich are set to present Robert Lewandowski with a ‘mega offer’ to renew and extend his contract.
The Polish striker joined Bayern Munich in 2014 on a free transfer from rivals Borussia Dortmund, showing he’s not averse to running a contract down. Bayern currently have Lewandowski on a contract until June 2019, by which time the striker would be 30 years of age.
There would almost certainly be widespread interest in the player, unless his form drops off a cliff, and Bayern obviously want there to be no prospect of a free exit, or a cut-price move the year before.
The club had been repeatedly linked to signing Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, explain SportBild, and adding a younger striker to the squad would have helped plan for the future and give Bayern something of a safety net.
Everton would be loathe to sell the striker, but Bayern would be a very attractive option for Lukaku, and would have been financially able to pay a big fee. However, Goodison Park chiefs need not worry, because SportBild say that idea was ‘wiped from the table’ by Carlo Ancelotti who insisted he only has eyes for Lewandowski.
Bayern want to extend Lewandowski’s contract to 2021 and he could be offered around €15m or more per year.
With Juventus buying Gonzalo Higuain, and Ancelotti being happy with Lewandowski alone, that’s two possible vulture off the list for Lukaku next summer.
