It’s now been a couple of weeks since Everton started being linked to Sporting midfielder Wendel, and things have been up and down very quickly.

It began with claims from Brazil saying Carlo Ancelotti had personally telephoned the player to talk about his possible signing.

But things then cooled down, with recent updates saying the Toffees were still to make any kind of bid for the player.

Now a report from Italian outlet Area Napoli comes up with a good reason why Everton may not make an attempt at all.

They say Wendel wouldn’t be able to get a work permit to play in the Premier League, and that would create a big problem for Marcel Brands.

That leaves Napoli with a great advantage in the race for the 22-year-old, while Sporting are said to be demanding about €20m for him.

Wendel doesn’t have any caps for Brazil, an in case he doesn’t hold an EU passport, it makes it difficult for him to get a work permit. Especially if signed for only €20m.
