Everton forward Romelu Lukaku has told the Belgian media he wants to break the scoring record for Belgium. The Everton star is just eleven goals away from equalling Paul van Himst despite being only 23 years old.

Speaking to Voetbal Magazine, Lukaku was asked about getting closer to Van Himst’s tally of 30 goals for the national team.

The Belgium international said the national team scoring record is something he desires because it’s been held for by Van Himst, who he has a of respect for. The former Chelsea forward said the Belgian legend knows him well from his time at Anderlecht, and therefore can judge him for what he has gone on to achieve.

“That record, I want to break it. As it happens, I’d like to get that record from Paul van Himst, because I have a lot of respect for that man. He knows me from when I played for the youth of Anderlecht. If anyone can judge me, it’s him,” said the Everton attacker.

Lukaku has scored 19 goals in 54 games for Belgium, a similar goal ratio since joining Everton. His manager Ronald Koeman recently suggested he could go on to play for one of the major clubs in Europe, but for the time being the Goodison Park faithful will be hoping he commits himself to the club.
