Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has revealed he is working with Frank Lampard behind the scenes to improve his finishing, as he looks to learn from one of the Premier League’s best goalscorers.

Onana joined Everton in a big money move from Lille in the summer and has been a regular for the Blues since, establishing himself as a key player in Lampard’s midfield.

He’s quickly earned himself a glowing reputation from those who watch him every week, with many predicting a bright future.

While there have been plenty of plus points, with his driving runs and strength big positives, one major flaw has been his inability to put the ball in the back of the net.

That was recently seen in the defeat to Tottenham, when the midfielder spurned a glorious chance to put Everton in front by firing over the bar after a counterattack from his side.

That is one of several chances he’s missed this season and he admits he’s working to fix it with Lampard behind the scenes.

“Given that the game goes faster than in the French league, I think I have improved my scanning and speed of execution with the ball,” he told Pierre Deprez, relayed by RTBF.

“I work a lot on finishing with the coach after training. It is one of the missing pieces of my game, we both find that I can be more decisive.

“I’m also working physically because the sequence of games is not always obvious and so recovery is very important.

“The coach has me playing as a figure eight in a box-to-box style. He believes that with my qualities, I am capable of performing both defensive and offensive tasks.

“He is trying to instil this in me as he has done it during his career so there is no better way than to have him as a coach. I used to watch a lot of Premier League football when I was a kid, Lampard is a legend in English football.

“As a coach, he tries to create a real relationship with his players with whom he is very close and tries to communicate a lot with us, and I like that.”
