From time to time, Everton scout Carlo Jacomuzzi will make a press appearance in Italy, normally having a chat with a radio station.
Radio Marte, relayed by AreaNapoli, are the ones who managed to get hold of the Toffees staff member this week, using their chance to ask him a few questions about Kalidou Koulibaly and the Premier League.
No, Everton will not be buying the Senegalese defender from Napoli, but there have been multiple rumours about teams in the top six eyeing his services, including local rivals Liverpool, and the station wanted to find out if there was a real possibility of a transfer happening.
Jacomuzzi admitted there was a risk Koulibaly could end up in the Premier League, since there aren’t many top quality defenders there, and he mused that whomever missed out in Matthijs de Ligt would throw themselves at the Serie A star.
As for who could get him, well: “Manchester United is a pitfall these days. City? If Guardiola makes a decision, they buy. Napoli want €130m? In England, there are four team who can pay that amount.
“Liverpool? They’ve won so much from the Champions League, from the money from the federation and their sponsors that they can buy two Koulibalys. It would be a disaster for the others, having to find a way to go through that defence.”
Yes, the thought of a Virgil Van Dijk and Kalidou Koulibaly partnership certainly won’t be appealing to anyone other than Liverpool, seeing as the Dutchman by himself is already a force to be reckoned with.
As for whether Liverpool really do want to spend €130m on a new centre-back, we doubt it, but crazier things have happened.
