Everton were interested in a move for Freiburg midfielder Merlin Röhl in the January transfer window.

That’s according to Sport BILD, who report that Everton made two bids for the 22-year-old but were turned away by the German side.

The newspaper explains that Röhl has been impressing for Freiburg since joining in a €2.9m deal from Ingolstadt in 2022.

He developed quickly under former coach Christian Streich and has earned himself attention from outside of the Bundesliga, even after a torn ligament set him back earlier this season.

Everton are the first to have made a proper move and made two offers in the January transfer window. They were both turned down by Freiburg. SportBILD do not detail what Everton offered, just that they were both rejected.

They do say that Röhl’s current market value is around €12m, but anyone who wants him will have to pay ‘significantly more’ than that price.

Whether Everton return in the summer with that in mind remains to be seen, particularly after securing Charly Alcaraz at the end of the January transfer window.

They’ll certainly have more room to work their magic in that window and Röhl may be a name to keep an eye out for as a result.
