A star in Valencia before becoming a scapegoat in Barcelona, André Gomes couldn’t have had more contrasting times in Spain if he’d tried.
Escaping the ire of the Catalans by securing a loan move to Everton this season, the Portuguese midfielder has found a regular spot in Marco Silva’s first-team at Goodison Park, starting the last 19 league games in a row.
This streak has allowed Gomes to grow in confidence, and has increased Barcelona’s belief that a deal to sell their man permanently in the summer can be struck.
Marca have an article on Monday with a headline stating the La Liga leaders, needing money to fund moves of their own, are hoping to get around ‘€40m between Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes’, giving them extra money in their bank account to spend on a new striker and a new left-back.
They explain that while there is no clause in the Portuguese’s loan move to Everton, they still feel as if they will be able to get their money come the end of the season.
With Denis Suarez available to Arsenal at any time for €20m, that would, by the logic of simple maths, mean Barcelona are hoping to get €20m (to make up the €40m) for Gomes as well.
However, Marca, whether it’s a mistake in the headline or in the text, state the Catalans estimate they can bring in ‘another €40m’ from his sale.
It’s been made clear Gomes has little future under Ernesto Valverde at the Nou Camp, with both parties wanting to part ways, yet where he ends up next summer is still up in the air.
Everton would be the logical landing spot, but that all depends on whether Marco Silva is still their manager in June.
The Toffees are currently 11th in the Premier League, but have only won three of their last eleven games, losing the other eight.
If that streak continues, Silva’s future (and Gomes’ in the process) might be far away from Goodison Park.
