Bernard and Richarlison may have both joined Everton recently, but they are well aware of what the Merseyside derby means to the club.
Both Brazilians featured in the match against Liverpool this Sunday, knewing that a bad result for the Reds would complicate their race for the Premier League title.
So even though the Toffees couldn’t get a win, the players claim to be happy for making the Anfield Road side lose their spot on top of the league table.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil, Bernard has claimed there was a different support at Goodison Park on Sunday: “We know that they always show up, that they push the team. But today was a special taste for being the derby”.
Richarlison also told ESPN Brasil there was a special motivation for this match: “For sure. A derby is a derby. We always go in with blood on our eyes. We try to do our best, unfortunately we don’t leave with the victory. But we managed to take two points from Liverpool, who are fighting for the title.”
“Whether we want it or not, they are our great rivals, and we could get in the way. Because it’s important for us here too, if they win the match, they would go back to the first place, and we did not want that”.
Everton now prepare to go to the St. James Park to face Newcastle United next Saturday, then host Chelsea at Goodison Park a week later.
Towards the end of the month, Richarlison is joining the Brazilian national team for the friendlies against Panama and Czech Republic. Bernard couldn’t get a call up this time.
