Unlike many of his colleagues in the France squad, Lucas Digne doesn’t play in the Champions League, doesn’t fight for the biggest trophies, and isn’t really a big star.

That stage of his career is, at least for now, behind him. He’s picked up league titles with Barcelona in Spain and PSG in France, and has a sackful of cups from both countries.

Having moved to Everton in 2018, Digne could have slipped off the radar for Didier Deschamps, with the France manager having a wealth of options to choose from. Instead, Digne continues to be part of the set-up and will hope he has a good chance of travelling to Qatar for the World Cup.

Tuesday’s edition of L’Equipe takes a look at the player’s situation with his national side, and they say he’s been a safe bet for Deschamps, even if he’s never really made a starting position his own.

He’s taken part in more than half of France’s matches since the 2018 World Cup, and has an opportunity against Finland tonight, in a match he’s expected to start, to show he can be more than a ‘SuperSub’.

Despite not being spectacular for France, and failing to score in 42 appearances, the Everton player has ‘never disappointed when the manager trusted him’.

L’Equipe state: ‘He also has benchmarks at all levels and is always reliable when the coach calls him.’

Having just missed out on the 2018 World Cup squad, the 28-year-old, described by the French newspaper as ‘The faithful soldier’, will surely be doing everything he can to show Deschamps he should be included next time.
