On December 30th, Corriere Dello Sport explained Paulo Fonseca has turned his attention towards Everton’s Bernard as AS Roma are struggling in their efforts to sign Stephan El Sharaawy.
The Brazilian has previously worked with the Serie A side’s manager when the duo were at Shakhtar Donetsk.
On Wednesday, Il Tempo stated Fonseca has held talks with the Toffees winger’s agent, and these claims are relayed by Calciomercato.it.
The website then provides their own information on this case. It’s claimed the Giallorossi’s main target has been El Sharaawy since September. However, Fonseca’s ‘first choice’ would have been Bernard.
According to the report, there has been ‘no new contacts’ between Roma and the entourage of the 28-year-old.
The wideman’s current deal at the Merseyside club lasts until 2022.
Calciomercato.it further explain the South American’s high salary and the ‘position’ of Carlo Ancelotti’s side are posing ‘obstacles’ for the Italian side in signing the Everton player.
Bernard has started only once and has four more appearances from the bench in the Premier League this season.
