Time and distance aren’t enough to stop a big rivalry. We all know that.

Ramiro Funes Mori’s spell at his childhood club River Plate may be over, and he may be far away at Everton, but he still ended up involved a big mess caused in an Argentine league game this weekend.

Boca Juniors were facing Rosário Central at La Bombonera on Sunday. The home team opened the scoring, and then Rosário equalised with a goal from Téo Gutierrez.

Of course, the Colombian striker had to remember the two years he played for Boca Junior’s deadly rivals River Plate. So he celebrated it by making a gesture of the diagonal strip of River’s shirt, which made Boca fans and players crazy.

Then followed a classic South American mess, with players going against each other, police and reserves on the pitch, a referee lost and the fans loving it.

Téo Gutierrez ended up being sent off, but well, it all was worth it.

Everton defender Funes Mori was certainly watching the match from England, and tweeted saying “how great you are!” to his former teammate (via Info Bae).

It obviously had a quick reaction in Argentina, so the Everton player ended up deleting the tweet and apologised.

“I apologise for what I’ve written, the fan from inside came out.  I acknowledge my mistake.”

Funes Mori and Gutierrez played in the same team at River from 2013 to 2015. They’ve won an Argentine League, a Copa Sudamericana and a Copa Libertadores together.

Not in Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up against swansea City on Saturday, Ramiro Funes Mori failed to get on the pitch at all for Everton.
