Over the past 12 months, Everton have been linked with more players than they usually are.
That’s of course partly due to increased investment in the Merseyside club, and partly down to the impending sale of Romelu Lukaku letting everyone know a big chunk of money would be burning a hole in the club’s pockets.
One of the players linked more seriously was Jonathan Cafu, with the Brazilian forward impressing so much at Ludogorets. During the January transfer window, Sport Witness were able to report Everton being in outline talks for Cafu, along with several other Premier League clubs.
In the end, Everton didn’t go through with their interest, and that’s something referenced by L’Equipe on Wednesday. Everton, like Lyon, then sat back and watched Cafu sign for Bordeaux during the summer transfer window.
The French newspaper say Cafu hasn’t yet proven himself, in what is quite a harsh look given it’s still only September. A big signing for Bordeaux, the suggestion seems to be that Everton and Lyon may have been right to back away from a deal.
It’s in Cafu’s power to prove L’Equipe, and perhaps Everton, wrong.
