Loaned out to CSKA Moscow on February 21st, Jean-Philippe Gbamin could be returning from Russia very quickly.
The Everton loanee, who has struggled to make a name for himself at the Toffees ever since arriving at Goodison Park in a rather expensive £22.5m transfer from 1. FSV Mainz 05, has made three appearances from a possible three with the Premier Liga side, winning all of them in the process.
However, with the current situation in Russia and Ukraine, over the past week, FIFA decided and then confirmed that players in the Ukraine league, and foreigners in the Russian league can leave their clubs as free agents, on a basis that would last until the summer.
This also applies to those currently on loan, and AS Roma in Italy could be a landing spot for the Everton man if he decided to want to leave.
Corriere dello Sport have an article on the situation on Thursday, explaining that Tiago Pinto, the club’s technical director, ‘will have four weeks to possibly deal with profiles useful’ to their cause, until April 7th.
That includes the Ivory Coast international, who has a French passport, and therefore wouldn’t count towards a non-EU slot at the club.It’s said the Everton loanee ‘could do for Mourinho’, because he can play both in midfield and help at the heart of the defence.
He’s well travelled, having played in France, Germany, England and now Russia, meaning he probably wouldn’t have too much trouble adapting in a new country if he has to.
All positives for Roma if they get a chance to sign him, but we’ll first have to wait and see what Gbamin decides to do, because he played for CSKA Moscow five days ago, and seems to still be there for the time being.
