French side Saint Etienne will spend the €2m needed to sign Niels Nkounkou on a permanent basis from Everton in the summer.

That’s according to Score.fr, who believe the full back could ‘walk in the footsteps’ of club legend Loïc Perrin if he continues on his current track.

Nkounkou has been on loan with the French side since the January transfer window, having brought an end to his loan at Cardiff City to make a temporary return to his homeland from Everton.

He’s proved to be a revelation since bagging six goals and seven assists in 14 games in Ligue 2 so far and earning rave reviews left, right and centre.

His latest strike means that he became the first defender since Perrin to score so many goals in a league season when he managed six in 2013/14.

It took him a whole season to achieve that, with a double on the last day securing his status, but the Everton man has done it in 14 games and still has six left to overtake the ‘major record’.

Everything suggests he will do so and that will raise further questions about his future, who Saint Etienne have ‘every interest’ in signing on a permanent basis from Everton this summer.

They can do so thanks to a €2m purchase clause that was inserted into the deal, with it felt that the Toffees couldn’t have ‘imagined’ Nkounkou could develop into the star that he has in the last few months.

They may now be regretting accepting such a low fee, something that now looks like a mistake as Nkounkou continues to impress and potentially break records.
