Decimated in the midfield position due to injuries, Everton were forced to play centre-back Mason Holgate alongside Tom Davies against Manchester United.

The 23-year-old performed well, but he isn’t a long-term solution for Duncan Ferguson and co. in the role, meaning we are likely to see at least one midfielder arrive at Goodison Park in January.

If that is the case, then Everton could have given us an idea of where they are planning on getting their man from, sending a scout to watch Bordeaux welcome Strasbourg on Sunday afternoon, according to Girondins4Ever.

This is the second time in two months (that we know of) the Toffees have travelled to watch Paulo Sousa’s side, and at the time, we thought they might have been targeting a centre-back.

The likeliest option was Pablo, who had been previously linked with Manchester United back when José Mourinho was in charge, and that might have still been the reason for their trip.

However, there was an interesting player they could have been looking at in the visitor’s squad, one that would help their problems in midfielder: Ibrahima Sissoko.

The 22-year-old has previously been linked with a move to Newcastle, and his ability to play box to box or sitting a bit further back would certainly solve a number of Everton’s problems in the role.

Just something to keep in mind as the January transfer window draws nearer.
