Everton have made an approach for Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio, according to claims from Italy on Monday.

As explained by Calciomercato, Everton have made contact to learn the possibilities of finding a deal for the 26-year-old. But the player’s priority would be AC Milan, who are currently, according to Calciomercato, the strongest side in the race for him.

It’s not mentioned if this was what Musacchio’s camp answered to Everton, but it’s made pretty clear that Merseyside wouldn’t be the number one destination for the player.

Everton’s approach is said to be motivated by the player’s contract running out in 2018, so the next summer window will be a good opportunity to get him if a renewal isn’t agreed.

It’s curious that before moving to Villarreal, Musacchio played for River Plate’s Academy. That’s exactly where another Everton defender, Ramiro Funes Mori, has came from. They’re currently both part of the national team, and it would be interesting to see them together at the same club.

Everton have been linked with Musacchio before and it’s impossible to know if the latest claims are based on new information or force of habit.
