Given he had barely featured on the bench, never mind played for Everton this season, it was no surprise to see Jonjoe Kenny departing in the January transfer window.

The youngster has found himself out of the picture after returning from a solid loan spell with Schalke last season, where he was a regular and a favourite.

The move to Celtic provides him with the chance to get things going again and, presumably, set himself up for a permanent exit from Goodison Park in the summer.

While the move was not surprising, the lack of interest from Schalke was, with them having needed a right-back since Kenny departed in the summer and big admirers of him after last season.

Well, WAZ explain their lack of interest today, and it seems Everton’s refusal to do them a favour on the finances was the reason.

They report that despite rumours about a potential return to the club, the matter never became ‘concrete’ for the Germans.

That was mostly to do with the dire financial situation at the club, with the financial package of loan fee plus salary beyond the ‘financial possibilities’ at the club.

Everton were also seemingly steadfast in their demands, with it explained that they were ready to ‘accommodate’ the Bundesliga side in this regard.

Thus, a move for Kenny was ruled out, and they instead signed William from Wolfsburg, with Kenny heading to Scotland in search of game time, and the chance to be a regular once again.
