Brighton forward José Izquierdo has backed James Rodríguez to be a big hit at Everton once he completes his move to the club.

The Blues are on the verge of sealing a deal for the Real Madrid midfielder, with Carlo Ancelotti having pushed to secure a reunion with the player he worked with in Madrid and at Bayern Munich.

A deal has rapidly progressed over the last week, with Rodríguez spotted in London yesterday ahead of the proposed move.

There has been much talk about the player joining Everton, with the switch very much considered a backwards step given the club’s he’s played for in his career.

In fact, there has also been debate among Everton fans about the deal, with some sections of the Blues faithful debating the logic in their club signing a 29-year-old player on high wages for a relatively big fee.

His compatriot Izquierdo, however, has no doubts he will prove to be a big hit on Merseyside, backing him to play a ‘very important role’ for his new club.

“I hope that James does very well,” he told Gol Caracol.

“Everyone knows the conditions that he has and the different player he is.

“I’m sure James Rodriguez will play a very important role both at his club and in the league here in England.

“The more Colombian players can come to England, the more the doors will open for other players of ours who have the talent and ability to play in England, which for me is the best in the world. We hope they will go well, James.”
