Everton make a huge effort with their off the pitch activities, and Everton in the Community (EitC). A few years ago a pop-up football show took place outside Manchester town hall and the Premier League and their sponsors had a stand, Manchester City were there, companies selling collecting cards and such, and a big truck which had youngsters from EitC performing.
These weren’t young footballers, but rather children and young adults who take part in other activities organised by the club. It was in the middle of Manchester, and yet Everton attended and provided a great day out for the kids involved. In truth, not many fans attended, but the group that Everton took appeared to be having a really good time.
One of the latest EitC initiaitves has been picked up by a Spanish newspaper, and they sound quite impressed. The Goodison Sleepout is an idea which will bring awareness to homelessness as well as raising funds.
Everton’s statement on the Goodison Sleepout reads: ‘Everton in the Community is opening up the gates to the Park End on Friday 25 November and inviting Evertonians to grab their sleeping bags and sleep out at Goodison Park to experience the challenges that homeless people face on a daily basis.
Participants will leave the comfort of their home and brave the elements as they help to raise much needed funds for EitC and raise awareness of the homeless across Merseyside. The Charity is grateful to local legal firm, Stephensons Solicitors LLP who have made a kind donation to the cause.
Round up your friends and family to take part in this unique event at Goodison Park. The cost is entry is a £10 registration fee and Everton in the Community is asking participants to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
The Goodison Sleepout will raise vital funds for the Club’s official charity, helping to identify and support vulnerable people and to change lives for the better.’
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have picked it up and are full of praise. It’s fair to say the Spanish press aren’t often quick to praise Premier League clubs, with all their wealth and marketing efforts, but this has clearly impressed.
Mundo Deportivo say Everton’s effort is ‘laudable and speaks volumes about the ethical commitment of a club to its city and fellow citizens who suffer most’.
