Everton have initiated contact with Paulo Fonseca about replacing Sean Dyche at Goodison Park, but the Portuguese coach may be tempted to wait until the summer.

That’s according to L’Equipe, who report that Everton have made Fonseca a ‘priority’ to replace Dyche after sacking him on Thursday.

The newspaper reports that Fonseca could be set for an immediate return to work after being sacked by AC Milan at the end of December.

That’s because he’s at the top of Everton’s list of managerial candidates to replace Dyche. Discussions with him have been ‘initiated’ about a move to Goodison Park.

However, Fonseca is seen as a ‘difficult path to materialise’ as the Portuguese coach, who has ‘solid contacts’ at his disposal, could be tempted to wait until the summer to bounce back from his difficult spell at Milan.

In other words, Fonseca may prefer to bide his time and see what options are on the table for him in the summer rather than jumping to Everton and the middle of a relegation battle.

The fact that Fonseca is in the frame should be of no surprise given the Friedkin Group worked with him at Roma. That was a short relationship as he was in charge before their arrival and the two parties parted ways at the end of the 2020/21 season.

That was very much an amicable split, though, at least if Fonseca’s words on the matter since are to be believed and it seems he is on their shortlist again after the surprise decision to sack Dyche this week.
