Southampton are pushing ahead with a move for Schalke’s Weston McKennie as they look for a replacement for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
The Danish midfielder completed a move to Tottenham last week, leaving the Saints with a hole in their midfield that they need to fill.
McKennie has been named as a target, with reports over the last month stating they were keen and indicating that they had a clearer run on the player after a proposed move to Hertha Berlin fell through.
And it seems they have now moved to get their man, with BILD reporting that Saints coach Ralf Hasenhüttl has ‘launched a new attack’ to try and secure the USA international.
The German newspaper states that Southampton have reportedly offered €22m to secure the midfielder, a price they believe can help them ‘outsmart’ Everton and Fulham, who are also interested.
Schalke are demanding €25m for their star man, but it’s believed that €22m would be ‘acceptable’.
That’s because Schalke chief Jochen Schneider and Ralf Hasenhüttl have a good relationship after working together at Leipzig, a fact that could help to ‘increase the agreement factor’ between the two clubs.
