Having signed Jordan Pickford last summer, which proved to be a wise decision, Everton’s Maarten Stekelenburg ended up being relegated to the bench alongside Joel Robles.

The 35-year-old made just three appearances in all competitions during the 2017-18 campaign, two of which came in the Europa League and its qualifiers, while the third was in a 3-0 win over Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

A groin injury then put an end to his season, but the veteran goalkeeper is now back and ready for action, although that might not happen at Goodison Park.

Contracted until 2019, the Dutch shot stopper could find a home elsewhere this summer, with Lille in France said to be interested.

According to France Football, the Ligue 1 side have contacted Stekelenburg recently, as Christophe Galtier continues his search for someone capable of helping Mike Maignan, who hasn’t earned his manager’s full trust just yet.

However, he isn’t their first option, since he’d be more expensive than another veteran they’ve got in touch with, Cédric Carrasso, currently without a club after being released by Galatasaray last month.

It’s an option for the Everton goalkeeper, but the financial constraints in place at Lille for the foreseeable future mean they might have to go for the cheaper deal.
