The Portuguese media is today back with updates on the chase of Premier League clubs for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

A story from newspaper Record now claims that Everton could soon win the race for the 22-year-old, even though Newcastle United still have a shot at the signing.

It’s claimed that the Toffees are now ‘close to reaching an agreement’ with Sporting. The clubs have been sorting out details over the past few weeks and could complete the transfer for around €20m.

Record writes that Nunes is ‘at the exit door’, and that means he could leave for Everton, who are making the ‘strong effort’.

They point out that Newcastle United failed in an attempt to sign him in January, and the Magpies ‘haven’t given up’ on his transfer just yet.

A week ago, Sport Witness’ sources confirmed that Everton are in talks for Nunes.

However, it was also claimed that a deal would drag on for a little longer, especially with the Toffees’ search for a new manager being their priority.
