Nicolò Zaniolo has failed to score a goal or register an assist in the league for AS Roma this season.
José Mourinho has hardly used the 22-year-old in recent times and the situation could see him look for a move away from the Serie A side. That’s according to Calciomercato, who add Tottenham Hotspur ‘like’ the winger’s profile.
The Italy international was an unused substitute in his side’s 2-0 win over Genoa. The ex-Chelsea manager snubbed Zaniolo and instead handed Felix Afena-Gyan an opportunity. This change paid off as the latter scored a brace.
Another report from Calciomercato states the Portuguese tactician now wants answer on the pitch after having ‘pampered’ Zaniolo for months.
His contract expires in 2024 and there’s been talk of an extension. However, the Giallorossi want to wait, while other clubs ‘start showing up again with his entourage’.
The attacker’s suitors are not lacking, ‘especially in England’, where Spurs are in the picture. For now, there is no ‘danger’ of a transfer, even if the player has ‘shown a bit of discouragement in recent weeks’.
Zaniolo suffered two serious injuries in recent years and it takes time for him to return to the top. ‘Patience’ is needed, which is currently lacking among some of the players of his age.
While Zaniolo waits for things to improve at Roma, Tottenham, who ‘like’ his profile, would continue monitoring his situation.
