It is ‘entirely possible’ that Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel will be the one pushing for the club to sign Raphael Varane from Manchester United, but the deal is a potentially risky one for the German giants.

That’s according to FCB Inside, who cover the potential transfer today and analyse whether Varane makes sense as a target for Bayern in January.

Several reports over the last week or so have indicated that Varane may be on his way out of Manchester United in the winter window after growing frustrated with the situation at Old Trafford.

Bayern have emerged as surprise candidates for the defender, with Tuchel keen to continue rebuilding the squad to better suit his needs.

FCB Inside look at the potential deal today and what speaks in favour of it and against it, putting Tuchel very firmly in the former category.

They say that the fact is with Varane Bayern would get an ‘experienced central defender’ who knows how to win big titles, having established himself as a serial winner during his time at Real Madrid.

At 30-years-old he is considered ‘the perfect footballer’s age’ and would add to a position Bayern need to strengthen. On that front it’s a ‘win-win situation’, especially when you add in his relationship with Dayot Upamecano, who he plays alongside with France.

That would allow him to quickly gain a foothold at Bayern and further fit in under Tuchel, whose style of play he would be well adapted to. Indeed, the belief is that Varane is probably being discussed because of Tuchel.

Then there’s the potential asking price, with reports indicating Manchester United would let Varane go for €20-30m, a figure which would fit well given Bayern reportedly have €75m to spend on signings. If they could get him for €20m, it would allow money to also be spent elsewhere.

There are problems, though. Chief among them are Varane’s wages, which are believed to be around €17m at Manchester United and considered too high. There is also his injury record, which has been less than stellar in recent years and is considered concerning.

They are outweighed by the potential benefits, however, and it is ‘entirely possible’ that Tuchel will ‘make a strong case’ to get the Frenchman from Old Trafford in January.
