Sporting starlet Gelson Martins seems to be finally being offered a new contract at the club. The youngster currently has the worst salary of the squad (€125k per year) and should now get something to recognise his good form.
According to A Bola, the extension should be negotiated during the international break which will happen next week. The current deal expires in 2021 and Sporting will want to add one or two more years to it.
Between all the clubs who have been recently linked to the player, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Manchester United’s interest is the one which is taken more seriously. That’s because the club have allegedly watched the player over ten times this year, so the Portuguese media consider him a real target for the Red Devils.
Martins has a €60m release clause, which is quite high for a €125k per year youngster, but still a normal procedure for a Sporting player.
It’s obviously unlikely Manchester United would pay that much for such an unproven 21-year-old, but Sporting don’t care, and that’s the funny part. A Bola says they still want to raise the clause, setting it to €80m.
It’s crazy, but still it’s just an ambitious club defending their own.
Should Jose Mourinho be as interested as the Portuguese press reckon he is, then the Manchester United manager will have to get dealing, and get that price down.
