Victor Boniface is pushing to leave Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle United want to sign him, potentially for €50m.
That’s according to SportBILD, who report that Leverkusen are set for a summer of exits and Boniface to Newcastle could be one of them.
The newspaper explains that unlike last year, Leverkusen face a summer of their big name, key players all looking to leave and continue their careers elsewhere.
Boniface is one of them and has been pushing for a transfer since the January transfer window. He never got his wish at that point but still wants to move and Newcastle United are ‘after him’.
The transfer fee of ‘€50m is being discussed’ by the various parties and there is a confidence, at least in Germany, that he will be on his way.
This is a continuation of reports over the last few months, which have always had Newcastle in the picture for the striker and keen ahead of the summer.
A report in March made it clear that Newcastle had already spoke to his entourage, and was followed by a claim earlier this month that the striker was very popular at Newcastle and a deal was 69% complete. That was followed by a claimed two days ago that Newcastle had held talks with the Bundesliga club but there had been no formal negotiations.
We’ve always questioned why Newcastle would pay €50m for Boniface give they have Alexander Isak, who is the undisputed number one up front.
Until he leaves, it would make little sense for such a big transfer to be in Newcastle’s viewfinder, although there is the chance they’re lining it up just in case.
