A Sunday claim from Italy’s Tuttomercatoweb has caught the eye of Sport Witness.

With a headline reading ‘Lazio, from England: 40 million from Liverpool for De Vrij’, TMW go on to explain that an English tabloid, one which Liverpool fans aren’t too fond of, has made the claim of a €40m offer from Anfield for the Dutch defender.

That’s odd, because it’s arguably far more than Liverpool would need to pay. De Vrij’s Lazio contract expires in June, so from January onwards he can talk to other clubs and sign a pre contract agreement.

In such a situation De Vrij’s value is far less than €40m, and it wouldn’t be too hard to argue that even if he had several years of contract remaining, the €40m figure would still be too high.

A very good indication of this is repeated Italian reports that should De Vrij extend with Lazio, he’ll have a buyout clause of around €25m. Lazio wanted a higher one, as reported in Italy in October, but since then the €25m figure has become pretty much accepted.

If Liverpool really want De Vrij in January then €40m would be more than enough to secure him for Jurgen Klopp.
