Over the past day or so Ovidiu Popescu has been repeatedly linked with a move to Celtic. Brendan Rodgers is said to be keen on the player, and Celtic officials have been sent to check him out.
As for a price to get Popescu to Celtic Park, FC Steaua București chief Gigi Becali has claimed Popescu will be worth €25m one day. And a current transfer has been priced at around €10m for Celtic.
However, that’s not really true. Becali himself has been quoted this week saying Popescu would cost €3m. Romania’s DigiSport have him saying: “I said that I’ll let him go when it’s good and for the club and for him. If he goes now goes to the team that I’m getting €3m.”
Such a transfer is never easy, with Gigi Becali a very controversial figure in Romanian politics and sport. A short trip through Google, with a brief stop off at Wikipedia, would make that situation pretty clear.
A lot is just a show and it would be typical for Becali to insinuate there was Celtic interest without having firm grounds to do so. Similar has happened before, and Celtic are a big name who can be used to suit.
