Right after Chelsea’s bid for Gabigol was revealed, Santos made an official announcement saying the youngster had renewed his contract in a deal which commits him to the club until 2021.

Unlike what happens in the European market, a Brazilian player won’t use rumours to get a pay rise at his club, since they would have no chance of competing on salary with English or Spanish giants in any case. So it’s more likely that Chelsea’s bid was true, and was leaked intentionally to show how much Gabigol wants to stay.

But what has Gabigol rejected and why does he want to stay? UOL has an article today explaining a few details about Chelsea’s bid and the player’s decision.

The London club have reportedly offered €10m plus bonuses on a five-year-contract for Gabigol. That would be €2m for season, €138k per month or €38k per week.

It’s not a high salary for European standards, but still double of what Gabigol will make at Santos with the new deal. According to UOL, he will earn less than R$300k (€80k) per month.

The website contacted some people who are close to the player, and they have different opinions on why he rejected the offer. Some say he wants to leave Santos as an idol, just like Neymar. Others revealed the player has the dream of joining Real Madrid, and if the bid was from the Galacticos, it would have another outcome.

True or not, Gabigol did the same as Neymar. In 2010, Santos also received an offer from Chelsea for a youngster, that time Neymar, but he ended up signing a new contract until 2014.

Neymar stayed, won the Copa Libertadores and left Santos as an idol, when he was still 21.

Let’s see what Gabigol can do.
