SS Lazio are reportedly working on protecting Stefan de Vrij from Chelsea’s interest.

According to Gazza Mercato, after rejecting a €25m offer from the Blues, the Italian side are now planning to offer the defender a new contract to convince him to stay at the club.

The negotiations are set to happen in a couple of weeks and Lazio will offer €1.8m per season plus bonuses in a contract which will run until 2020. De Vrij’s current deal at the club expires in 2018, and he currently makes €1.2m per year.

De Vrij spent a big chunk of the 2015/16 season out with a serious knee injury. But he’s now recovered and played the first three games of Lazio’s Serie A campaign and scored the equaliser against Chievo last Sunday.

If Chelsea still want him they may find his price has gone even higher, if Lazio get the protection of a new contract.
