A month ago, the Portuguese press came out saying Manchester United had reached an agreement to sign Benfica youngster Umaro Embalo.

The deal was never made official, but the player’s agent still confirmed an interest from Manchester United, saying there have indeed been conversations for the player.

When trying to explain why the transfer didn’t go through, the local papers mentioned that there are many other clubs from several countries interested. And it turns out that the rumour has grown a bit today, now with reports from Spain.

Newspaper Marca reports that Barcelona are also interested in the youngster, as they have been monitoring his development at Benfica for some timw.

Speaking of competition, the Spanish outlet claims there are two other clubs interested, Manchester United and RB Leipzig, with one of them having offered €13m for the player, a bid which was rejected by Benfica.

Barcelona would have no intention to bid for him now, as the plan is to keep watching his development and then decide if it’s worth going for him in the summer window.

In case you’re wondering why Marca writing about Barcelona, and if they haven’t used the opportunity to wind up the Madrid rivals, there’s obviously a bit of sauce in their story.

They claim Barça are going after Embalo after missing out on Vinicius Junior, who will be heading to Real Madrid after a €45m deal with Flamengo.

But in any case, they make it clear that Barça are not in negotiations to bring Embalo now. So if the Manchester United talks really exist, then José Mourinho’s side should be leading the race.
