Thursday night was a great one for Jose Mourinho, perhaps his best as Manchester United manager so far. Needing a win against Feyenoord at Old Trafford, Mourinho’s team went about it in some style and the 4-0 scoreline didn’t flatter the home side.

Perhaps just as pleasing was the performance of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who showed enough to make his earlier absences even stranger. Whatever happened between Mkhitaryan and Mourinho, if Thursday showed what will happen in the future, then the past will soon be forgotten.

Despite their side being well beaten, Feyenoord’s fans sang throughout the game. Drinking in Manchester beforehand, the Dutch contingent had prepared a bunch of songs in English and went about singing them with gusto.

Even Mourinho was impressed with the away fans, and Feyenoord manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has told the Dutch media his opposite number made a point of mentioning it.

Quoted by SoccerNews, Van Bronckhorst said: “The atmosphere was good. Mourinho gave a compliment during the game about how fantastic our fans were.”

Van Bronckhorst was disappointed the support couldn’t be rewarded with a result, but explained it was great to feel the weight of the presence in the stadium.
