No, we aren’t talking about the Raymond Verheijen, but Liverpool’s first team coach Pep Lijnders, who has been speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Lijnders signed for Liverpool as an academy coach from Porto, before being promoted to the first team back-room staff by Brendan Rodgers.

Following Jurgen Klopp’s arrival at the club, Lijnders was retained and is now believed to be an important member of the coaching staff.

De Telegraaf explain how the Dutchman managed the first team in Klopp’s illness absence in February. It’s reported he selected the team, did the team talk, as well as speaking to the press too.

De Telegraaf say Lijnders is like a younger version of Klopp at Melwood, and working under the former Borussia Dortmund boss is the best thing that could happen to him.

Asked about working under Klopp, Lijnders said: “All I have ever wanted in my football adventure, my experiences at PSV, Porto, my hunger for all about total football, I’ve found here at Liverpool.
The only thing we do in training is to score, pass the ball to our best players as quickly and as often as possible. We don’t want to walk the ball 60 metres back. Beautiful, man!
Pep LijndersYou know what’s funny? He in his entire career has never worked with a DutchmanThe click is good, that was already there very quickly. But I find him and his football thoughts actually almost like a Dutchman.
Asked how he tackles criticism, Lijnders said he takes a lesson from the Liverpool manager: “I then look at Jürgen, who says he’s not arsed about it, haha.
