Manchester City yesterday announced the signing of John Stones from Everton in a  €56.6m deal.

According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the English international is set to earn €8m/season at the Etihad.

It is reported Ronald Koeman tried to convince the player, after the European championships in France, to stay at the club.

Koeman asked Stones to continue his development at the Merseyside club, and even offered him an improved contract, but that wasn’t enough as the player already had his mind set.

Stones was keen on moving to Manchester City to continue his development under former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to several top European clubs in the last couple of years, and was always expected to leave Everton at some point.

Stones has signed a six-year contract at Manchester City, as they prepare for their first season under Pep Guardiola.
