Former Holland international Willem van Hanegem has told the Dutch media he wasn’t surprised Feyenoord beat Manchester United last week. The Premier League side went down 1-0 to the Dutch club in the opening group stage game of this season’s Europa League.

Speaking to Voetbal International Van Hanegem was asked about Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the Swede came in for flak from the Feyenoord fans. Van Hanegem said Ibrahimovic has proven he’s a top class player, and therefore he shouldn’t be disrespected in this way.

However, despite the presence of the forward in the second half last Thursday he revealed he wasn’t surprised his former club managed to pull off a win.

“Zlatan is a great player, a winner. You need to treat him with respect. No, Feyenoord win over Manchester United did not surprise me,” said the former Feyenoord midfielder.

With the defeat to Feyenoord on Thursday followed by yesterday’s defeat to Watford Manchester United have lost their last three games. Manchester United have now dropped to 7th in the Premier League table, and are already six points behind leaders Manchester City.
