Atletico Madrid’s confidence over potentially signing Cristian Romero from Tottenham appears to be diminishing, thanks to Ange Postecoglou.
That’s according to Sport, who report that while Atletico manager Diego Simeone has requested the Tottenham man be signed, it is not an easy deal to get done
He’s the number one option but Tottenham are showing a ‘reluctance’ to even negotiate for the Argentina international.
This was demonstrated by Ange Postecoglou, who has insisted publicly that they need to keep the centre-back this summer.
“It’s essential to keep Romero. We have to make sure players like him stay,” he said.
“If he leaves, who do you replace him with? There aren’t many like him. It will be very important for the club to try to keep him, and to do so for the long term.”
That was a clear indication it will be difficult to get the centre-back out. The newspaper also references the fact that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is known for being a tough negotiator and is unlikely to back down.
There is a belief that €50m ‘could be the solution’ but at the moment it’s a case of ‘dreams fade away’ rather than them getting more concrete.
The reality, though, is that Tottenham were never going to be easy to deal with and Romero is a complicated deal to get done. Now the tone is pessimism, but we wouldn’t be surprised if that changes again by next week.
