Norwegian goalkeeper Rune Jarstein spent the majority of his playing career in his homeland before moving to Hertha Berlin in 2014.
The 35-year-old is a regular figure in the Bundesliga side’s starting XI and has held on to the position with the national team since Lars Lagerbäck was appointed Norway manager in 2017.
His contract with the Berlin based side expires in 2021, and he’s coming towards the autumn of his career, but that hasn’t stop the keeper from insisting he still has a dream of playing for Manchester United.
Edwin van der Sar joined the Red Devils when he was in his mid-30s and the Dutchman can be used as inspiration for Jarstein to fulfil his dream of joining the Premier League side.
“I still dream about playing for Manchester United. That dream has been there for many, many years. I live in hope,” TV2 quoted him as saying.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has the services of David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Lee Grant as the three goalkeepers at Old Trafford, and Dean Henderson is on loan at Sheffield United.
The Spain international committed his future to United and will continue to be United’s first choice.
Jarstein wouldn’t mind settling for a backup role, if it allows him to fulfil his dream of joining United.
“Yes, of course… I’m happy to support De Gea. I’ve always had a dream of playing at United. I am allowed to dream. United are my favourite club,” the Norway international explained.
Despite his dream, Jarstein is well aware it’s a long shot.
“The Bundesliga is a good league, but when you get to the biggest clubs, it’s high level. It would be nice to try and see how it would have had been. However, it’s a little too high up,” the keeper stressed.
“I am doing very well at Hertha Berlin, so I do not see myself playing in the Premier League.”
