Robert Sanchez’s progress with Brighton & Hove Albion was one of the reasons the Premier League club allowed Mat Ryan to move to Arsenal in January.

With Sanchez edging the Australian aside in the Brighton reckoning, sending the latter off to the Gunners saw a clear break and allowed Sanchez to be seen as the club’s senior option between the sticks.

He’s been with the Seagulls since the age of 15, making his way through the club’s youth ranks to become the senior option. Loan moves at Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale helped, and Sanchez has made the breakthrough with Brighton at the relatively young age of 23.

His emergence has caught media attention, and that’s seen suggestions there could be efforts to get him in the England set-up. Speaking to Onda Cero in Spain, he admitted he’s heard those rumours but nothing directly.

Indeed, it’s the Spanish national team he aims to play for, stating: “It would be a dream.”

Brighton will be hoping to see their stopper get closer to achieving his big aim, safe in the knowledge they have him on a contract until 2023.
