There is some debate to be had when it comes to Victor Osimhen’s transfer from Lille to Napoli, with the figures involved varying from report to report.
A quick look at Transfermarkt would have you believe that £67.5m were spent by the Italian side for the Nigeria international, while Monday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport are pushing a figure of €49m, which is considerably less.
What is almost certain, however, is that when he gets sold, whether it be to Newcastle United or another club, it will be for a profit, and Aurelio De Laurentiis, the club’s owner, will be happy.
We say this because Corriere have an article on Osimhen where they look at what he could be worth in the summer.
They point out ‘it took €49m to snatch him from Lille in a somewhat complex operation for a few too many capital gains’, and yet, nearly two years later, the player ‘now has another dimension.
This ability to score goals on the pitched has Newcastle ‘unleashed’, as the player is ‘alone a guarantee fund of €100m’, described as ‘more than double what he cost’ originally.
That’s one way to look at it, of course, if that’s the fee you want to believe he originally cost, but the belief around Italy is that the Magpies will almost certainly come forward in the summer to try and buy him.
Eddie Howe appears to have made Osimhen the man he wants to bolster the Newcastle attack going forward at St James’ Park for the new project, and if there is a decision within the Tyneside club to spend €100m on a new striker, they could very much get their man.
Whether they do, however, remains to be seen.
