Wahbi Khazri arrived at Sunderland from Bordeaux in January 2016 and spent the next 18 months playing for the Black Cats in the Premier League.
After Sunderland were relegated to the Championship for the 2017/18 season, the Tunisian international left the English club and joined Rennes on a season-long loan deal. The attacking midfielder impressed on his return to France, scoring nine goals and registering two assists in 24 Ligue 1 appearances.
According to the French newspaper L’Equipe, Rennes are interested in signing Khazri on a permanent deal. Rennes have the “door wide open” for the attacking midfielder to join them this summer.
It’s clear that Khazri will leave Sunderland, either on loan or a permanent deal, this summer. This is mainly because the English club were relegated from the Championship and they will be playing in League One next season.
Kharzi has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League. Rennes, who finished fifth in the league, will be featuring in the Europa League. Though the door is open for him to join the French outfit, the midfielder has not made a decision on his future.
He’s probably waiting to see if anyone else comes forward.
