Donny van de Beek was hoping a move to Girona this summer would revive his career, but the signs are not positive early on.
That’s according to Sport, who report that the midfielder is ‘having problems adapting’ to life at his new club after joining from Manchester United.
The newspaper explains that it was surprising to see the Dutchman starting the recent clash with PSG in the Champions League as he’s only had ‘discreet participation’ in La Liga so far.
That’s hinted his role in the team will be ‘rather secondary’ particularly after he arrived ‘quite punished’ by physical problems. This was a cause of his time at Manchester United, with his low minutes leading to him being easily injured when he does play.
It took him a little longer than expected to get up to speed during pre-season with Girona and suffered a small muscle discomfort that halted his adaptation.
He’s failed to bounce back from that, though, with the Dutchman’s entourage confirming to the Catalan newspaper that he is ‘having problems adapting’ at the Spanish club after signing from Manchester United.
That’s been the case on a physical level because of his previous issues but also tactically, with him yet to fully pick up what manager Michel wants from him. The team’s style of play is believed to suit his profile but he’s yet to slot in as they’d like.
His next opportunity to impress will come on Wednesday against Rayo Vallecano, but whether he is back in the first team remains to be seen.
All indications are that he won’t be with adaptation going slow and the desired revival post Manchester United not on the fast track.
