Since the Saudi takeover at Newcastle United, it’s been claimed that the club have been looking for a director of football, with Ajax boss Marc Overmars being heavily linked to the job.
The Dutch media even reported the Magpies’ invited the 48-year-old to have a conversation with them in England. That request was denied, with the official being fully focused on his job at the Amsterdam club.
Now important news come from The Netherlands, where De Telegraaf reports that Overmars has reached an agreement for a new contract at Ajax.
The Eredivisie side had a Twitter video leaked in which they showed the director celebrating an extension to 2026. Now journalist Mike Verweij claims to have the information confirmed by the official himself.
De Telegraaf even mentions Newcastle United’s approach in their report, claiming that ‘after much deliberation’, the Ajax boss ‘cancelled’ his meeting with the Premier League side.
He’s been ‘one of three top candidates’ for the Magpies.
Overmars is considered to be the Dutch side’s most successful director of football, given the sales he’s made in the past few years. Now it seems there’s more work to be done in the coming years.
His previous deal ran until 2024. There was no rush for an extension now, and that only shows how sure he is about staying for longer.
