Midfielder Saul Niguez has admitted his move to Chelsea is a ‘gamble’, but he is looking forward to playing in a team full of world-class talent.
The Atlético Madrid midfielder completed a deadline-day move to Stamford Bridge last night after a summer of speculation about his future.
He had been linked with the Blues for the last few months, having fallen down the pecking order under Diego Simeone last season.
The rumours died down when it appeared he could be part of a swap deal with Barcelona for Antoine Griezmann, although that deal eventually never happened as the clubs couldn’t make the finances work.
That brought Chelsea back to the table at the end of the window, with them electing to move for Saul when their efforts to get Jules Koundé from Sevilla fell by the wayside.
It brought a temporary end to a 13-year association with Atlético for Saul, who admits the move is a gamble in that regard.
“A player of my name and going out on loan is a gamble. It doesn’t make any sense, honestly,” he told IbaiLlanos on Twitch, relayed by AS.
“It’s an investment in me. It’s a gamble to get back to being me. These last three seasons have not been easy for my family and me.
“The pity is that I have not been able to say goodbye to the red and white fans, explaining my version of how I feel and how I have felt.
“I think it’s a win-win situation for both sides because Atletico are bringing back one of the best players in their history, and I, well, let’s see if it’s a win-win situation for me.
“Chelsea have a hell of a team; let’s see how we fit in because it won’t be easy for my partner to fit in either.”
