Hatem Ben Arfa, then a Newcastle United player, was so badly injured in a 2010 match against Manchester City that subsequent complications could have led to amputation.
French newspaper Le Parisien have a report on Saturday which details the treatment Ben Arfa received, after he badly broke his leg as a result of a poor tackle from Nigel De Jong, then at Manchester City.
Le Parisien say Ben Arfa was rushed to an ‘antiquated’ Manchester hospital, but all the while his advisor was trying to get hold of renowned doctor Eric Rolland. After an operation, Ben Arfa was moved to ‘a more modern clinic’ in Newcastle.
Then travelling to Tunisia to continue his recovery, the Newcastle United player picked up an infection, which Le Parisien point out is likely due to the ‘unsanitary hospital in Manchester’.
A Staphylococcus infection was diagnosed, and there was the danger of amputation. Le Parisien say the situation was ‘very serious’ and Rolland immediately took the player back to France and performed a second, successful, operation.
Quite what the Manchester hospital involved would have to say about this is unknown, the French newspaper don’t appear to have asked for comment.
